DRAW Green Initiative

We care deeply about disaster victims that lost the geographical lottery and had their lives and communities turned upside down by a flood/tornado/hurricane/wildfire.

But we also believe that we HAVE TO be good stewards of the planet where we live. We want to have a positive impact on the environment before major storms strike. So, under the DRAW GREEN INITIATIVE, we are starting two new programs.

But we also believe that we HAVE TO be good stewards of the planet where we live. We want to have a positive impact on the environment before major storms strike. So, under the DRAW GREEN INITIATIVE, we are starting two new programs.

1. Recycle your plastic bags with us!

We are accepting all plastic bags to reuse/recycle, in order to create backpacks that can be used by flood victims as they muck out their homes and salvage their belongings.

Plastic bags can be shredded into “plastic yarn,” which then can be crocheted into large tote bags that DRAW will distribute and incorporate into our storm responses. We have volunteers ready to create the yarn and crochet the bags, and all we want YOU to do is recycle your everyday plastic grocery bags with us by dropping them off at The Coffee Bucket.

So, those pesky plastic bags from CVS, Kroger, or anywhere else you shop, that sit for decades in landfills after they’re used once can now be used to serve disaster victims through our Green Initiative.

2. The Coffee Bucket travel mug.

We are aware that coffeeshops can create a lot of garbage. We want to fix that, and reduce our trash footprint.

So, starting tomorrow, we will be selling Coffee Bucket travel mugs at the shop for $15, but people who reuse the mugs will get a 15% discount on their drink each time they bring it to the shop.

Our hope is that our regulars will each have a reusable mug, and together, we’ll greatly reduce the number of paper cups that end up in the dumpster.

3. We compost our coffee grounds.

Micah 6 is a Pontiac-based nonprofit dedicated to neighborhood revitalization.  One of their programs involves urban gardening, where they grow fresh produce for low income families in the area.

As a support to Micah 6, DRAW composts all of the coffee grounds from the Coffee Bucket and gives them to use for the M6 urban gardening program.

This reduces our daily waste by nearly half, and uses it in a way that serves the community.

As always, together, we can make a difference!
